Summary
An explosion at the Gerdec site, where munitions were being dismantled, killed 26 people in March 2008. Fatmir Mediu, then Minister of Defence, resigned that month. A 2009 Supreme Court decision dismissed the criminal case against him, and it was later reopened. In January 2023 SPAK concluded he had broken the law and sent him to trial on abuse of office, with the corruption investigation continuing.
Mediu's defence says the prosecution is political, that no new evidence exists, and that the matter concerns technical military aspects. The GJKKO trial has been slow: hearings were postponed several times, and in late 2025 the presiding judge and the defence disputed her role in the preliminary hearing. No verdict was found in the sources reviewed.
