Aurel Zarka, former Vlorë chief prosecutor: GJKKO detention and Toyota Yaris file (2024-2025)
Status: Charged; on appeal or before High Court (conflicting reports)
Summary
On 29 July 2024 the GJKKO, at SPAK's request, ordered the detention of Vlorë former chief prosecutor Aurel Zarka. Shqiptarja reported the charges as illegal influence and active and passive corruption of judges and prosecutors, across eight case files. Four are linked to the Toyota Yaris file. The court also banned publication of the case file.
Zarka denied the charges. Later reports, only partly confirmed here, say the first-instance GJKKO panel found him guilty (4 years, reduced to 2 years 8 months under summary trial, with a 5-year public-office ban). A December 2025 report says an appeal panel overturned the sentence and sent the file to the High Court. Dates and the High Court status conflict across sources and are not confirmed.
